From: Ms. Huber
Dear Parents-For our Field Trip to the Teaching Museum next week (on Tuesday, December 17, form coming home today), we’ll need two parent chaperones. You’ll need to arrive at school at 8:30, and we’ll hopefully be back at 1:30. We’ll eat lunch at the museum. If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail me back. I’ll take the first wo parents that respond. Thanks!
Jekyll Field Trip Parent Meeting
We will have a parent meeting on Thursday, January 9, at 6:00 p.m. to go over details, expectations, and questions for the students’ field trip to Jekyll Island in March. One item we wanted to inform you about sooner is the cost of the trip for students (and chosen chaperones) is $250 each. We’ll go over more payment details in January at the parent meeting. See you then!
Important Dates:
Wednesday/Thursday, December 11/12 – Prepositional Phrases Test (on non-TAG Day)
Tuesday, December 17 – Huber’s Homeroom Field Trip to Teaching Museum
Tuesday, December 17 – December Book Log Due
Tuesday, December 17 - Vocab/Spelling Quiz #6
Wednesday/Thursday December 18/19 – Text Structure Test (on non-TAG Day)
Friday, December 20 – Holiday Party/Last Day of School
Vocabulary/Spelling: We are now working on spelling list #6 (should be in your child’s binder as of today). For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Huber. Remember they need to know the meaning of the suffix/prefix pattern in order to define words on the quiz. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year).
Grammar: This week we will conclude our unit on prepositional phrases. In this unit, students will need to be able
to identify prepositions, prepositional phrases, the object of the preposition, and expand sentences by adding prepositional phrases. Sixth graders will also be learning how to add dashes to sentences. The unit test will be this Wednesday or Thursday (on non-TAG Day). There are two extra resources on my website for extra practice. Our next unit will be on Synonyms, Antonyms, and Homophones/Homographs.
Writing: This week, we’ll continue to practice the comparison essay structure. We’ll conclude two practice comparison essays
in class this week for practice. On Friday, we will have writing test on comparison essays where they’ll compare/contrast
two important people in a historical time period (they’ll be able to use their notes and biography book from below on the test). To study, they just need to know the structure of a comparison essay (in their Writer’s Notebooks). Next week, we’ll
start a new unit on Opinion Writing.
Reading:
This week we will review all skills in our unit on nonfiction text and text structure. For this unit, they chose a
biography to read in class (either Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Thomas Edison, or the Candy Bomber…depending on their lexile/choice). As they read each chapter, they learned how to take notes using a guide called Cornell Notes. We are now done with this novel, and we have started the second part of the unit where we’ll read a graphic novel on another
important historical figure and then compare/contrast the two figures. We’ll also continue reviewing text structures
throughout this week and using our book and many others/articles to analyze for text structure (will keep a chart in their binders). Additionally, 6th graders will learn how to identify biased and unbiased text (this is a big standard for them). Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (one choice book for December). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due this Tuesday, December 17.
