Dear Parents-
Newspaper Day: Thank you for all the yummy donations for Newspaper Day! The kids enjoyed their treats while sharing their hard work! Thank you!!
Important Dates:
Wednesday, December 12- Comparison Essay Test (Informational Writing)
Thursday, December 13 – Text Structure Unit Test
Tuesday, December 18 – Book Log Due
Thursday, December 20 – Class Holiday Parties
Friday, December 21 – First Day of Winter Break (Enjoy 😊)
Spelling: We took our quiz on spelling list #5 last week. We will wait and pass out List 6 when we return in January.
Grammar: This week we’ll continue to build our vocabulary with a unit which will include synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and homographs (homonyms). We’ll have this test next week before Winter Break.
Writing: This week we’ll continue to expand on the informational writing unit by learning how to write a comparison essay. We’ve completed one practice essay (in their Writer’s Notebooks). This week, we’ll continue to research two choice topics to compare/contrast and then finish writing a second practice comparison essay. On Wednesday, we’ll have a comparison writing essay as a test.
Reading: This week we’ll conclude our unit on nonfiction text and text structure. For this unit, they chose a biography to read in class (either Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, or the Candy Bomber…depending on their lexile/choice). As they read each chapter, they learned how to take notes using a guide called Cornell Notes. We are now done with this novel, and we have started the second part of the unit where we’ll read a graphic novel on another important historical figure and then compare/contrast the two figures. We’ll also continue reviewing text structures throughout this week and using our book and many others/articles to analyze for text structure (will keep a chart in their binders). They will have a unit test on Thursday, December 13. Additionally, 6th graders will learn how to identify biased and unbiased text (this is a big standard for them). Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (one choice book for December). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due this Friday, December 18. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home (You might want to check their review before signing. Since it is the second 9 weeks, I’m starting to not accept reviews that are messy, incomplete, or not written in complete sentences).
