From: Ms. Huber
Dear Parents-I hope everyone had a wonderful break and were able to spend time with their families! I am very thankful for all of you this year and the support you’ve shown your child/me! I’m also grateful to be able to teach your children and spend each day learning with them!! Thank you!
Newspaper Day: We will be sending out more information in a separate e-mail about our upcoming Newspaper Day. On Friday, December 7, fifth graders will get to wear their PJ’s to school and be able to sit back and enjoy reading others’ newspapers while enjoying a fresh cup of coffee (AKA hot chocolate) and a doughnut. They’ve worked really hard on this project (future publishers they are), and we want to give them a chance to share them and feel proud of themselves. We’ll do other news related activities on this day as well. Of course, we’ll need some help with providing the doughnuts and hot chocolate, so if you are interested in sending in/volunteering, please look for that e-mail coming soon (and thank you in advance)!!
Important Dates:
Friday, November 30 – Prepositional Phrases Test
Friday, November 30 – November Book Log Due
Thursday, December 6 – Jekyll 1st Payment & Intent Form Due Today!!
Friday, December 7 – Newspaper Day (Students will get to wear their PJ’s and share their newspapers)
Friday, December 7 – Spirit Day
Spelling: We are now working on spelling list #5 (should be in your child’s binder as of homework tonight). For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Huber. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year). The quiz will be toward the beginning of next week.
Grammar: Before Thanksgiving, we started a unit on Prepositional Phrases. We have reviewed prepositions from 4th grade, learned about prepositional phrases, and identified objects of a preposition. Additionally, in this unit, 6th graders will learn the difference between an adverb and preposition and about adverbial/adjective phrases. The test will be this Friday, November 30.
Writing: This week, we’ll continue a practice informational writing on a topic of their choice. They will choose a topic to inform us about and walk through the writing process again (reviewing the structure and skills as we go) as I conduct writing conferences. This choice writing will be used in a class contest on informational writing.
Reading: This week we will continue our unit on nonfiction text and text structure. For this unit, they chose a biography to read in class (either Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, or the Candy Bomber…depending on their lexile/choice). As they read each chapter, they learned how to take notes using a guide called Cornell Notes. We are now done with this novel, and we have started the second part of the unit where we’ll read a graphic novel on another important historical figure and then compare/contrast the two figures. We’ll also continue reviewing text structures throughout this week and using our book and many others/articles to analyze for text structure (will keep a chart in their binders). We are also almost done with a project (rubric/directions in binder) which is due next Thursday, December 6. They are using Publisher to create a historical newspaper using research and various text structures. This project should be done at school only. Additionally, 6th graders will learn how to identify biased and unbiased text (this is a big standard for them). Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (two choice books for November). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due this Friday, November 30. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home (You might want to check their review before signing. Since it is the second 9 weeks, I’m starting to not accept reviews that are messy, incomplete, or not written in complete sentences).
