Unleash the Lions (Fifth Grade Fun Week)
The 2018-19 school year is quickly coming to an end, and now it is time to celebrate the achievements of our 5th grade students. The Dolvin staff has worked with the room parents to coordinate the activities for the last week of school. To make all of these activities possible, we are asking for a DONATION of $10 per student. An email will be sent to you with a link for volunteer sign-ups on Monday, April 29th at 7PM by your Homeroom Teacher. Volunteer sign-ups will be on a first come, first serve basis. When signing up to volunteer, please select only one event per family to allow an opportunity for all parents. If additional slots become available, your child’s teacher will contact you. The schedule of events went home last week.
Grammar: This week we’ll continue rotating back through the standards in grammar to review. Last week reviewed commas, quotes, and verb tense. This week we’ll continue to review the six verb tenses. We’ll assess these skills this Friday, May 3. The 6th graders have started a unit on Pronouns. So far we’ve reviewed personal pronouns, possessive, and antecedents. We’ve also learned about subject/object pronouns. This week we’ll learn about demonstrative, interrogative, and indefinite pronouns. Their test will be in two weeks.
Writing/Research: This week we’ll continue our Research unit which will conclude May 16 with the 5th Grade Living Museum (we’ll send parent time later as it nears). For this unit, we started by learning how to use different reference materials (dictionary, thesaurus, atlas, almanac, encyclopedia, and online/internet), and then last week we learned the steps of the research process including how to write a proper bibliography. This week students will continue to research and take notes on their chosen topic (see project sheet in their binders to sign) and follow the research steps in creating their Living Museum projects. All of their work for the Living Museum will be mostly done at school except getting their costume together, a little extra research if needed, and practicing their speech. They will have a test next week.
Spelling- List 11 (WWII novel words) are in your child’s binder (homework tonight). These words pertain to their current leveled WWII novel to help build our vocabulary. If you feel your child needs more practice, all their lists have been uploaded into the website spellingcity.com under Huber. Their spelling quiz will be next week.
Reading: This week we will continue a WWII novel study (either Number the Stars or Code Talkers). For this book, they will have reflection questions to answer for each chapter. These questions will be kept in their yellow novel folders and can be done for class work and then finished for homework (and studied for the test). For this book, we’ll review all of their literature standards (characterization, setting, conflict, resolution, tone, point of view, theme, comparison, and using direct quotes). Sixth graders will be reviewing symbolism and learning about the plot diagram. This book will count toward their May Log since we’ve just started it (well, on Wednesday). They did receive an April Book Log last week. They’ll need to read two books for April (if they are in 6th grade, one of these two books must come from a selection of 6th grade books in my classroom). The April Book Log is due tomorrow, Tuesday, April 30.
