Reflections: The Reflections contest has started and applications/directions are available in the media center. If you are interested in your child participating, please see the Dolvin Diary for more information or have them pick up the information in the media center.
Relay for Life Fundraiser: On Friday, The Relay for Life team will be holding their first fundraiser. They’d like us to all wear purple for $1.00. This money is used for cancer research. If you are interested, your child may wear all purple on Friday. Thanks!
Important Dates:
Tuesday, October 1- September Book Log Due (We’ve changed this date due to a religious holiday. We will give
them time in class, about 20 minutes, to complete on Tuesday, October 1, if needed).
Oct. 10, 11, & 14- No school for students
Spelling: We will pass out spelling list 3 this week (should stay in your child’s binder). For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Huber. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year).
Grammar: Last week we learned the rules of when to use commas in dialogue (quotes). This week we are going to review the position of a comma(s) within divided quotes. We will conclude our Commas & Quotes unit next week with an assessment on all rules of commas (dates, city/state, in greeting/closing of letters, compound sentences, and complex sentences, set off a direct address, with an appositive, and after an introductory word/phrase) and the rules for writing quotations different ways (whether direct quote or divided quote). The sixth graders will also learn and be tested on how to use parentheses within a sentence. Then we’ll start our next unit on Conjunctions & Interjections.
Writing: Last week we reviewed the different plot techniques we can use in our narratives, such as foreshadowing, tension, sequential order, flashback, and suspense. We also discussed the importance of revising/using vivid verbs (the number thing a writer can do to improve their writing is to use better verbs), specific nouns, transitions, and how to develop a narrative conclusion This week we’ll continue to review all our skills practiced in this unit together and continue a practice writing from beginning to end to prepare us for our unit summative this week. For this final practice writing, I’ll be holding writing conferences throughout. The students will get to choose an idea for a story and write it from beginning to end. Then we use this writing and share them for a class writing contest.
Reading: This week we are continuing our first novel which is either Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Hobbit, or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. Last week we reviewed character traits, points of view [1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, 3rd omniscient, and 3rd objective (6th grade only)], and types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. society, and person vs. nature). This week we’ll review how to write a summary and apply to their novel and also hold our first Book Club meeting. Don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders). Remember their class novel counts for one of the two books to read, and since we are discussing this book in class, they don’t need a book review for it. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the ONE completed book review, are due Tuesday, October 1.
