From: Ms. Huber
Important Dates:
Tuesday, January 29-Snow Day (see Fulton County site/e-mail for updates…kids do have HW)
Wednesday, January 30 – Lunch Bunch
Thursday, January 31 – Book Log Due
Snow Day
Tomorrow, Tuesday, we will have no school due to possible weather. Please stay tuned to news/Fulton County website for any additional news (about Wednesday). I have assigned homework for both of these days to prepare us for an upcoming writing test of which we cannot change the date. They know what homework to do on what day(s) if needed. IF Fulton County determines to not have school Wednesday, they might decide it is a Digital Learning Day. If it is, your child will receive a Must-Do chart in their Google accounts (we’ll also send it out to this e-mail and it is attached to the Dolvin website). They should complete the Must-Do side (the Can-Do’s are optional/parent decision). If they do not receive a Must-Do chart, then it will not be considered a Digital Day (but no worries….I still gave them a little work to do 😊).
International Day Coming Soon!
If you are interested in helping with International Day, please see information at end of Weekly Blast.
Grammar: We will continue our unit on verbs and verb tense. Since Winter Break, we’ve covered action verbs (direct objects and singular/plural spellings), linking verbs, helping verbs, verb phrases, and subject-verb agreement, participles, and started perfect tense. This week we’ll continue reviewing the perfect tense (past-perfect, present-perfect, and future-perfect). The 6th graders will also be learning about transitive/intransitive phrases, predicate nominatives, infinitives, and gerunds. There will be a unit test next week (pushed to next week due to weather days).
Spelling-List 7 has been added to your child’s binder (homework tonight). We will have the quiz in about two weeks. If you feel your child needs more practice, all of their lists have been uploaded into the website spellingcity.com under Huber.
Writing: This week we’ll continue our unit on opinion writing. So far, we’ve set a goal for our next summative, analyzed the opinion rubric, reviewed the purpose, learned the basic structure, learned how to brainstorm with a pro/con charts for brainstorming, developed quality opinion introductions, learned how to add counter arguments, focused on adding details, adding evidence, adding citations, and developing a conclusion. This week we are going to work on a final opinion practice writing to put all these skills together. We’ll use this writing for a class contest, so they may type or write this essay.
Reading: This week we’ll continue a unit in reading that includes Dramatic Literature & Folk Lore. Since Winter Break, we’ve learned the structural elements and how to identify the story elements in dramatic literature (a play), learned about tone/mood, and started exploring all the types, characteristics, and story elements found in folklore (including folk tales, fables, and fairy tales). This week we’ll continue analyzing fables as well as legends and myths. There will not be a class novel for this unit, so for their January Book Logs, all students will need to read two chapter books of their choice and complete two book reviews. These will be due next Thursday, January 31. For sixth graders, one of these two books needs to be chosen from a selection of 6th grade texts in my classroom.
