Important Dates:
Wednesday, August 28 – Curriculum Night-See you there J
Thursday, August 29-Picture Day
Friday, August 30- Book Log and Review due (see sheets in binder)
Monday, September 2 – Labor Day
5th Grade Behavior Policy
Please remember to be checking your child’s progress/behavior every day/week in their agendas and sign each day (we are still fine tuning some behaviors to meet 5th grade expectations).
Grammar: We have started our first unit which will review all 4th grade standards and usage rules for the following: common/proper nouns, singular/plural noun rules, possessive noun rules, action verbs, linking verbs, subjects, predicates, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. We will have two formative grades within this unit (they have taken notes in their Grammar Notebooks to study).
Spelling
Your child has received their first spelling list, and it should be in the rings of their binder in the Language Arts section. Their first quiz will be toward the beginning of next week. We are doing practice both in class and for homework this week. If you feel your child needs extra practice, please have them log-on to spellingcity.com.
Writing: We have started the year reviewing the rules for Writer’s Workshop and digging into the narrative genre. This week we will learn and work on techniques to develop a good introduction including character development, setting development, and placement of the conflict.
Reading: This week, I’m continuing to give one-on-one reading tests to each student. As I’m listening to students read, the others will be reviewing the story elements including the following: protagonist/antagonist (6th grade: static/dynamic), characterization, point of view (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd limited, 3rd omniscient, and 3rd objective/6th grade), identifying types of conflict (person vs. person, person vs. self, person vs. nature, and person vs. society), and choosing themes. They will also have time to independently read their choice book. Don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log/Review (should be in their binders). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due this Friday, August 30. We ask the parent to sign to know that they have been following through at home with good reading habits like reading each night.
