Important Dates:
Friday, September 28- September Book Logs WERE Due
Tuesday, Oct. 2 - 5th Grade Vision Screening (Bring Glasses!)
Wednesday, October 3 – Novel Test/Projects Due
Oct. 4, 5, & 8- No school for students
Spelling: We are now working on spelling list #3 (should be in your child’s binder). For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Huber. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year). The quiz will be next week after long weekend.
Grammar: We have concluded our Commas & Quotes unit and have started our next unit on Conjunctions & Interjections. Last week we learned about the three types of conjunctions (coordinating, correlative, and subordinating). We also learned how to use them correctly in simple, compound, and complex sentences. Sixth graders will be learning about compound-complex sentences, too. Next we will learn about interjections. For this unit, they will have fill-in-the-blank notes which we will keep in their binders to help on their homework/to study. The test will be next week.
Writing: Last week we learned about a new type of writing called a response to literature (considered informational). We learned about how to apply a topic, like theme, to their novel, and write a short essay including evidence. The students have a frame/outline of the structure in their Reader’s Notebook along with an example. We will continue to practice another response to literature this week in preparation for our novel test.
Reading: Last week we finished our first novel which was either Old Yeller or Call of the Wild depending on your child’s reading level. This week we will review themes to our novel and the resolution while also practicing how to write a response to literature (see writing above). We are continuing a short project coinciding with their novels (see project sheet in binders). It will be due next Wednesday, October 3, which is also the date of their novel test. For their test, they can study the questions and story map/notes in their yellow novel folders along with their response to literature structure. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log (should be in their binders-new one for October was passed out today). The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Wednesday, October 31. It will only be accepted if signed by parent so we can make sure the book was read and finished at home.
