From: Ms. Huber
Dear Parents-I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving break and are able to spend time with their families! I am very thankful for all of you this year and the support you’ve shown your child/me! I’m also grateful to be able to teach your children and spend each day learning with them!! Thank you!
Important Dates:
Wednesday/Thursday, November 20/21 – Vocabulary Quiz (Spelling List 5) on Non-TAG Day
Friday, November 22 – Thankful for Reading Day
(Kids can wear a book character costume for a contest or their PJ’s and bring their favorite books to read and share.)
Monday, Nov. 25-29 – Thanksgiving Break
Tuesday, December 3 – November Book Review/Log Due
Vocabulary: We are now working on vocabulary/spelling list #5 (should be in your child’s binder). For extra practice, please visit spellingcity.com and look under Dolvin/Huber. I have loaded all lists onto this site for practice (some might change throughout the year). The quiz will be this week. Students will need to know the meanings of the prefixes/suffixes and how to define their words using them.
Grammar: Last week, we started a unit on Prepositional Phrases. We have reviewed prepositions from 4th grade, learned about prepositional phrases, and identified objects of a preposition. Additionally, in this unit, 6th graders will learn how to use a dash. The test will be after Thanksgiving.
Writing: This week, we’ll continue a practice informational writing on a topic of their choice. They will choose a topic to inform us about and walk through the writing process again (reviewing the structure and skills as we go) as I conduct writing conferences. This choice writing will be used in a class contest on informational writing. We will be having their Write Score writing test tomorrow (Tuesday).
Reading: This week we will continue our unit on nonfiction text and text structure. For this unit, they chose a biography to read in class (either Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Thomas Edison, or the Candy Bomber…depending on their lexile/choice). As they read each chapter, they learned how to take notes using a guide called Cornell Notes. We are almost done with this novel, and this week we’ll start the second part of the unit where we’ll read a graphic novel on another important historical figure and then compare/contrast the two figures. We’ll also continue reviewing text structures throughout this week and using our book and many others/articles to analyze for text structure (will keep a chart in their binders). In addition, 6th graders will start to learn the difference between an article that is unbiased vs. biased. Also, don’t forget to ask your child about the requirements off the monthly Book Log. The Book Log should be signed by a parent, and it, along with the completed book review, are due Tuesday, December 3.
